Southwest United Synagogue Youth Regional Director: Maury Jacobs

We would like to introduce everyone to our new SWUSY Regional Director, Maury Jacobs. Maury was born in Dallas,Texas and grew up at Congregation Beth Torah (Rashi USY). Maury was the first ever Kadima President at Beth Torah. After his years in Kadima, Maury continued his leadership roles in Rashi USY as Freshman Rep, Programming/Israel VP, President, and Programming Israel VP. He also served the region as Communications VP and Programming/Israel VP. Maury has had a strong connection toIsraelever since his first trip with his grandparents around his Bar Mitzvah. Attending Poland Israel Pilgrimage and Nativ made his connection even stronger. During Maury’s college years at The University of Texas atAustin, he became a co-advisor for AAUSY with his good friend from USY, Sam Tugentman. He served in this position for the past four years before becoming our new director.

Maury’s favorite T.V. show of all time is LOST, and his least favorite is pretty much every reality show in existence. Maury loves most fruits and vegetables, but you don’t want to bring a peeled banana anywhere near him. Maury will tell you that his aversion to bananas is not just because they taste bad, but because they “have an awkward texture and terrible smell”.  Legend says that the last time someone tried to eat a banana near Maury, his eyes turned dark red, steam came out of his ears and nose and the person holding the banana disappeared into thin air, never to be heard from again. When Maury isn’t working on USY or avoiding bananas, he enjoys reading books, playing video games, and spending time with friends and family. His favorite Jewish holiday is Pesach and his favorite color is blue! Maury is extremely excited to work towards making this the best year SWUSY has ever seen!
